| This image was taken on 14 February 2000, just after NEAR-Shoemaker was inserted into orbit around near-Earth asteroid 433 Eros. The irregularly shaped asteroid has gone through intense collisions over its history. Some house-sized boulders are visible on the surface. Degraded and fresher looking craters dot the surface, a bright patch is visible at top left, and shallow troughs can be seen below the patch. 433 Eros is about 33 x 13 x 13 km in size, features as small as 35 meters across can be resolved. This image was created from images 0125971425 and 0125971487. (NEAR Eros 0125971425_mos) |
