The Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has developed five sets of digital images for use with student courses. The University has made these sets available for general educational use. Included in the ScienceMaster Learning Gallery are two different collections; the flower collection and the foliage collection. Each collection is but a few of the thousands of images to be found on the Virtual Foliage web site.
The sets are as follows:
- The General Botany set consists of over 2,000 pictures organized within the context of an introductory botany course.
It was created by Michael Clayton.
- The Plant Systematics Teaching Collection consists of over 4,000 images of vascular plants organized taxanomically. It is used by students as a reference in much the same way as a herbarium would be used. It represents a subset of a larger collection available on CD ROM.
- The Dendrology collection was put together largely through the efforts of a talented undergraduate, Darrin Kimbler.
Darrin started work on the set while taking our dendrology course. It includes of images of over 100 woody genera.
- The fungi collection is largely made from the personal teaching collection of Dr. Tom Volk at the university of Wisconsin - LaCrosse. While Tom's images can be accessed from here, he also has his own home page which serves as a gateway to his collection.
- Vegetation of Wisconsin in its entirety consists of the personal teaching collection of Dr. Virginia Kline retired naturalist at the U.W. - Madison's Arboretum.
Ordering Botanical Works on CD-ROM
While the content found at the Virtual Foliage Home Page is freely available over the World Wide Web, it is also offered on CD ROM. Both work on Mac OS 7.5 or greater or on Windows 95 & 98.
All proceeds go to support the development of new teaching resources at the Department of Botany at the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
